Ray Lawler
Summer of the Seventeenth Doll is a pioneering Australian
play, openly and authentically portraying distinctly Australian
life and characters. Set in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton,
it details the events of the summer of 1953, in the lives of
six central characters. Full text

Although, records of the Melbourne University list Anne
Fraser as the sole designer, from a set design by Barry Kay,
dated 1955, evidence of his assignment as co-designer can
reasonably be inferred. In this case it remains unclear,
however, whether both collaborated on the scenery & costumes,
or whether Kay may have designed the scenery and Fraser
the costumes.

Research seems to provide conflicting results in that the
identical cast is quoted to have performed at two different
venues, on precisely the same opening and season dates -
a) at the Union Theatre, Melbourne University, and b) at the
Russell Street Theatre, Melbourne. -
Further research is in progress to establish whether both
theatres happen to be identical venues.
