Lapák, the Dog

Lapák, the Dog, analogous to the Schoolmaster
Costume design
gouache and watercolour on paper
28 cm x 38 cm; 11 x 15 in
In portraying the analogies of the opera’s various characters – human with animal – Barry Kay has accomplished quite a feat in realising Janáček’s intentions by not only creating their costumes accordingly but also their facial characteristics, last but not least, for makeup purposes.
Badger

Parson
Costume design (verso)
pencil; preliminary sketch on paper

Although only the pale pencil drawing for the Parson is available for comparison, it does nonetheless clearly demonstrate the analogous resemblance to the Badger.
